May 2026 poll reveal: Campsite safety and security quiz - Caravan edition

Thank you to everyone who participated in our May 2026 Safety and Security Newsletter Quiz! We always value the insights and experiences of our Caravan and Motorhome Club members.

This month, we focused on site safety, manoeuvring, and the occasional "whoops" moments that can happen to even the most experienced tourers.

With 719 complete responses gathered, here is what you told us about those mishaps navigating UK Club Campsites.

The item of equipment that can suffer most on a campsite

When asked to identify which site equipment most often needs repair or replacement, the majority of you were spot on.

  • 57.1% of respondents correctly pointed to Electric hook-up (EHU) bollards as the most common casualty.
  • Entrance/exit barriers came in second with 20.9%.
  • Low-level lighting units accounted for 13.0%.
  • Barrier sensors received 9.0% of the vote.

The cost of a "whoops" moment

Accidents happen, but how much do they cost to fix? We asked you to estimate the average repair cost for site equipment when it is damaged.

  • 47.9% of you estimated the cost to be over £500.
  • 44.8% guessed it would fall between £250 and £500.
  • Only 7.2% believed the repairs would be under £250.

The average cost to repair site equipment or property during 2025 was £466.88. It is important to ensure you are adequately protected.

Did you know you're now covered for up to £1,000 for site accidents under our Caravan Cover? That means if you have bought or renewed your cover this year, and you accidentally damage club site property, you can claim up to £1000 on your cover. And it doesn’t impact your no-claims.

So you have the financial peace of mind to continue enjoying your holiday.

How are electrical hook-up bollards getting damaged?

Since electrical hook up bollards take the brunt of campsite damage, we wanted to know what you thought was the most frequent cause.

  • A significant 61.1% noted that collisions while backing into a pitch are the primary culprit.
  • 31.1% highlighted the simple mistake of forgetting to disconnect the electrical hook up cable before pulling out.
  • 7.8% believed issues with incorrectly hitching the car and leisure vehicle caused the most damage.

Prevention is better than cure

The Caravan and Motorhome Club community is highly experienced, and the results of our final question truly reflect this. We asked for the most effective way to prevent a collision with site equipment when arriving at a pitch.

  • An overwhelming 98.7% agreed that having a passenger or 'spotter' stand outside to guide you, ensuring they stay visible in your mirrors, is the ultimate preventative measure.
  • Only 0.8% rely solely on their vehicle’s reversing camera and sensors.
  • Just 0.4% rely on the automated 'object detection' alerts on their motor mover handset to stop the vehicle for them.

Technology is a fantastic aid, but it is clear that nothing beats the trusty, traditional "spotter" method to safely guide your outfit onto a pitch.

Thank you once again for taking part in our poll and for your continued commitment to keeping our Club campsites safe for everyone. Safe travels and happy touring!
