What our customers say

Frequently asked questions

  • What type of insurance do I need if I've converted a van myself?

You can benefit from specialist motorhome and campervan insurance with the Caravan and Motorhome Club if you have self-built or converted a van into a campervan that meets basic DVLA criteria for a campervan or motorhome.

Some providers will require your vehicle to be legally classed as a campervan or motorhome with the DVLA before providing specialist cover. Alternatively, you can look to buy a personal van cover.

Once this is completed, you will need to buy campervan/motorhome insurance to be able to legally use it on the roads.

  • What changes/modifications are needed for a van to be classed as a campervan?

We consider a campervan acceptable for cover if the following design features are included:

    • Seats and a table
    • Sleeping accommodation (which may be converted from seats)
    • Cooking facilities
    • Storage facilities

Equipment shall be rigidly fixed to the living compartment; however, the table may be designed to be easily removable.

  • What is the benefit of specialist vs personal van insurance?

Specialist motorhome and campervan insurance offers more relevant cover; for example, for contents, equipment, awnings, and overseas travel, and it can often be cheaper than personal van insurance.

  • Can I drive a campervan with a normal car driving licence in the UK?

In general, yes. Most full license holders can drive a motorhome/campervan on a standard car driving licence, provided the weight of the motorhome isn't over 3,500kg.

However, a weight limit of 3,500kg applies to drivers aged over 70, or a driver licensed since 1 January 1997, unless a medical test or an additional test, respectively, is passed.

The vast majority of motorhomes and campervans do not exceed 3,500kg in weight, but it is worth double-checking to be safe.

For full details, check out our technical advice page on licences for caravans and motorhomes.

  • What modification does the Caravan and Motorhome Club’s policy cover?

As long as a vehicle meets the requirements to be considered a campervan or motorhome (see above), we’ll cover most modifications.

  • What modification do I need to declare?

If you make modifications that impact the engine, brakes, transmission, or performance of the van, these will need to be declared.

You don’t need to declare a modification, such as a cooker or wardrobe, that has been added as part of the conversion.

There is also no need to declare cosmetic modifications.
