May 2026 poll reveal: Campsite safety and security quiz – motorhome & campervan edition
Thank you to everyone who participated in our May 2026 Safety and Security Newsletter Quiz. We always value the shared experiences of our Caravan and Motorhome Club members.
This month, we focused on campsite safety, manoeuvring, and those occasional "whoops" moments that can happen to even the most seasoned motorhomers and campervanners.
With 756 complete responses gathered, here is what you told us about navigating UK Club Campsites in your outfits.
The most common casualties on a campsite
When asked to identify which campsite equipment most frequently needs repairing or replacing, the majority of you were in agreement.
- 60.2% of respondents correctly pointed to Electric hook-up (EHU) bollards as the most common casualty.
- Entrance/exit barriers came in second with 18.3% of the vote
- Low-level lighting units accounted for 13.0%
- Barrier sensors made up the remaining 8.4%
The cost of a "whoops" moment
Accidents can happen to anyone, but how much do they actually cost to fix? We asked you to estimate the average repair cost when site equipment is damaged.
- 49.7% of you guessed the cost to be over £500
- 43.5% estimated it would fall between £250 and £500
- Only 6.8% believed the repairs would be under £250
The average cost to repair site equipment or property during 2025 was £466.88. It is important to ensure you are adequately protected
The great Electric hook-up (EHU) cable conundrum
Since EHU bollards take the brunt of campsite impacts, we wanted to know what you thought was the most frequent cause.
- A significant 49.7% noted that the primary culprit is simply forgetting to disconnect the EHU cable before pulling out.
- 42.4% highlighted collisions while backing into a pitch
- 7.8% believed issues with incorrectly hitching the car and caravan/motorhome/campervan caused the most damage.
It seems the ease of simply turning the key and driving a motorhome can occasionally lead to a swift, unintended tug-of-war with the local bollard.
Perfecting the pitch manoeuvre
Motorhomes and campervanners are highly resourceful, and your answers on how to avoid site equipment collisions reflect a wealth of touring experience.
- A resounding 74.3% agreed that having a passenger or 'spotter' stand outside to guide you, ensuring they stay visible in your mirrors at all times, is the safest method.
- 25.3% stated that getting out of your outfit to personally survey the pitch and any obstacles before you begin the manoeuvre is the most effective preventative measure.
- Only 0.4% said they rely solely on the built-in reversing camera and parking sensors.
While modern built-in reversing cameras and sensors are fantastic tools, it is clear that the motorhome community still heavily favours the traditional "spotter" method, or a personal visual check, to safely position an outfit.
Thank you once again for taking part in our poll and for helping to keep our Club campsites safe for everyone. Happy touring!
