From hitch heads and tyres to water systems and awnings, a few simple checks before you leave home can help ensure a safe and stress-free summer getaway.

For many caravanners, summer is the season they've been waiting for. Whether it's a weekend break in the countryside, a family holiday by the coast or an extended tour across the UK, there is something special about setting off with the freedom to explore at your own pace.

But after months of winter storage or limited use, now is the perfect time to give your caravan a thorough once-over before heading out on the road.

While many owners focus on packing and route planning, a small fault discovered after arrival on site can quickly turn excitement into frustration. Fortunately, a little preparation can go a long way.

Start with safety

Before thinking about fridges, awnings and outdoor furniture, the first priority should always be ensuring your caravan is roadworthy.

Tyres should be checked carefully for signs of cracking, flat spots or uneven wear, particularly if the caravan has been stationary for long periods. Owners should also check tyre pressures against manufacturer recommendations and inspect wheel nuts before every journey.
