Looking after your E-Bike battery tips from Bikmo insurance

When you’re touring with the Caravan and Motorhome Club, an e-bike is the ultimate "sidekick" for exploring. Whether you’re popping to the local village for supplies or tackling a scenic coastal trail, your e-bike represents a significant investment.

The heart of that investment - and the part that requires the most care - is the battery. In partnership with Bikmo, we’ve put together this guide to help you protect your power source and highlight the exclusive benefits available to you as a Club member.

  1. Temperature is everything

The sweet spot: Store and charge your battery in a dry area between 5°C and 20°C to conserve the battery cells for longer.

Summer safety: Never leave your battery in a hot car or direct sunlight behind glass; heat can degrade cells rapidly.

Winter care: If you’re storing your bike at home over winter, take the battery inside. Cold damp conditions can lead to "deep discharge," which might prevent the battery from ever charging again.

  1. The 60% rule for storage

If you aren't planning to ride for a few weeks, don't store the battery at 0% or 100%. Aim for around 60% charge. This reduces chemical stress on the cells. Check it every month or two and give it a small "top-up" if it drops below 30%.

  1. Safety first while charging

Use the original charger: Cheap aftermarket chargers are one of the most reported causes of e-bike fires.

Don't charge overnight: Charge your battery when you are awake and nearby.

Smoke Alarms: Always charge in a room with a working smoke detector.

  1. Transit precautions

When traveling with your e-bike on a rear-mounted rack, always remove the battery and store it inside your tow car or motorhome. This protects the battery from road vibrations, rain, and potential theft.
